Boast In The Lord - Short and Sweet

"Mom, what is boasting?" my 5 year old asked from the backseat of the van. We were listening to a song called "Boast In The Lord" on Joel Micek's CD "Alive Unto You". As my girls and I talked about boasting, I realized that boasting is something that my kids are starting to hear on the play ground and around the lunch table.

Verses: Jeremiah 9:23-24 "Thus says the Lord: "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” ESV

Goal: To learn that boasting in God is the best thing to boast in.
Parent preparation:
  • Read Jeremiah 9:23-24 and 1 Corinthians 1:29-31. Note: the word “glory” in some translations is “boast”. Check out theBible.org for side by side version comparisons. (check out Romans 5:1-2 and Philippians 4:3 for further reference)
What to do:
  • Read Jeremiah 9:23-24 together.
  • Talk about examples of boasting your child may have heard before. Examples: Kids bragging about how they are smarter than anyone else (how high they can count, etc), kids bragging how strong they are, or kids bragging about how many toys or clothes they have, or how much money their parents have.
  • Tell your child that God wants us to boast in how great God is instead of how great we are. We can boast about His love and what He has done for us in Jesus Christ.
  • Listen to “Boast in the Lord" from Joel Micek's CD "Alive Unto You".
"Short and Sweet" are short blog posts that share ideas of how to teach the sweetness of God's Word to your child.
