"Why Do We Need A Savior?" Teaching Ideas

Theme Verse:  “The Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.” 1 John 4:14b KJV

Song: “Glory, Hallelujah, Praise God, Amen”

Parent Preparation: Genesis 1:27; 2:15-17; ch 3, Romans 5:19, 1 Corinthians 15:22, 1 John, 4:14, Revelations 12:9,
(for further ideas read Genesis 1, 2, & 3 Overview)

Supplies: Bible, children’s Bible, happy face and sad face (I drew mine on a paper plate), print out of teaching notes

Day 1
  • (Read Genesis 2:16-17)  Adam and Eve lived in a garden. They had lots to eat. (child hold smiley face)
  • Adam and Eve had 3 parts: body (point to body), soul (feel breath), and spirit (count to 3 on fingers)
  • (Read record in a children’s Bible, or from Genesis 3)
  • When Adam and Eve disobeyed God they still had bodies, and they were still breathing.  What died was spirit.  They didn’t have spirit any more. They were just body and soul (hold up 2 fingers)
  • Man couldn’t be close to God anymore, because man didn’t have spirit.  How sad. (child hold sad face)
  • God promised to send a savior! (child hold happy face
  • (Read theme verse).
Day 2
  • (Read record in a children’s Bible, or from Genesis 3)
  • The devil came to Eve looking like a serpent.  He told her that if she ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that she would not die.  Is this what God said?  No.  The devil did not help Eve obey God.  He was trying to get her to disobey God. (child hold sad face)
  • What did Eve do?  She ate the fruit that God told her not to.  Adam also ate it. Oh no!  God said that they would die if they did this! (child hold sad face)
  • They lost spirit.  They were just body and soul. (count to 2)
  • God promised to send a savior! (child hold happy face)
  • (Have child echo back theme verse).
Day 3
  • (Read record in a children’s Bible, or from Genesis 3)
  • Right away God promised that someday a man would be born that would be the savior and help people have spirit again. (smiley face)
  • Do you know who this man was that God promised?  Jesus Christ!
  • (Have your child repeat theme verse.)
  • This is why we are so excited about Jesus Christ.  He made it available for us to have holy spirit.  When someone is born again they have body, soul, and spirit (3 fingers)
  • (Flip through the Old Testament and talk about how these people looking for the savior)

Additional Activities:
  • Happy Face/Sad Face- Go through Genesis 1, 2 and 3 in the Bible or children’s Bible. Have your child hold up the happy face when something good happens and the sad face when something sad happens.
  • Speak The Gospel- Looking at this record in Genesis 3 is a great starting point for speaking the good new about Jesus Christ to your child.  As your child asks questions, be ready to further share the gospel.
