Jesus Christ Prayed To God - Teaching Ideas

Theme Verse: “he (Jesus) went up on the mountain by himself to pray” Matthew 14:23 ESV

Parent Preparation: Luke 6:12-13, Matt 26:36, Mark 1:35, Mark 14:23, Luke 11:1-9, Hebrews 5:7-8, John 11:40-42
Supplies: Bible, printout of teaching


Day 1
  • (Theme verse.  Have child stand with hands above head to make a mountain).
  • Do you think it was loud or quiet on the mountain?
  • Jesus would sometimes go to quiet places to pray.
  • What does it mean to be quiet?  What does it mean to be loud?
  • Which do you think is better for when you pray?
  • (Pray together.)
Day 2
  • (Have child echo theme verse).
  • Jesus went to a mountain to pray.  (pretend to be climbing up a mountain).
  • Jesus went to a garden one time to pray.  (pretend to be walking in a garden).
  • Where are places you go during the day?  grocery store, playground, library, etc (pretend that you are walking to those places, when you get there ask “can we pray to God here?”)
  • God can hear our prayers wherever we go.
  • (Pray together.)
Day 3 
  • (Have child echo theme verse.)
  • (Read Luke 11:1) The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray.
  • (Read Luke 11:2-4) Jesus gave them an example of how to pray.
  • “Hallowed be thy name”, this praises God’s name.  When we pray, we can praise God.
  • “Give us our daily bread” Jesus taught them to ask God for what they needed.
  • What are things that we can praise God for today?
  • What are things that we can ask God for today?
  • (Pray together.)

Read Records Of Jesus Praying

  • Read in a children’s Bible about Lazarus being raised from the dead.  Read what Jesus prayed in John 11:41-42
  • Read in a children’s Bible about Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane.
