"Jesus Christ Obeyed God" Teaching Ideas

Theme Verse: by the one man’s (one finger) obedience (sign for obey) the many (fingertips together, then spread out) will be made righteous” Romans 5:19b ESV

(check out this wonderful video about the sign for "obey")

Song: Chorus of “Oh, How I Love Jesus”, listen here
Oh how I love Jesus
Oh how I love Jesus
Oh how I love Jesus
Because he first loved me.

Parent Preparation: Romans 5:10-21, Philippians 2:5-12, John 14:30-31, John 6:38.  For further reference read the following: Chapter 1 in “The Acceptable Year of the Lord” by Walter Cummins.

Supplies: Bible, picture of Adam and Eve from Children’s Bible or coloring book, print out of teaching

Day 1
  • (introduce theme verse)
  • Adam and Eve did not obey God. (picture of Adam and Eve)
  • When God created Adam and Eve they had three parts.
  • They had bodies (have the child point to his/her body),  soul (have the child breath on hands), and spirit.
  • God is Spirit.  We cannot see spirit.  And he made Adam and Eve like Him with spirit.
  • (Read Romans 5:19a from your Bible).  Oh no!  Adam disobeyed God and now people are just body and soul.  They don’t have spirit.
  • God sent His son Jesus Christ to die for Adam’s sin.

Day 2
  • God sent his son Jesus Christ to die for the sin brought by Adam.
  • Jesus Christ could have said “No God, I don’t want to do it.”  Let’s look in the Bible and see what he did.
  • (Read Philippians 2:8b)  Jesus Christ obeyed God!  Yeah!
  • And then God blessed him.  God raised him from the dead, set him at his right hand, and gave him a name higher than any other name!
  • Now other people are blessed because Jesus obeyed.
  • (have child repeat theme verse)

Day 3
  • (read theme verse)
  • Jesus obeyed and now there is a free gift from God that is better than any other gift.
  • When we believe that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead we get holy spirit.  We then are 3 parts; body, soul and spirit.  We have the gift of eternal life!
  • God loves you and gave His son Jesus Christ for you.

Additional Activity:
  • Read about Jesus in the garden praying for God’s will to be done, Mark 14:32-42, Luke 22:39-46.
